Jens Müller-Sigl is an experienced counsellor at the BAföG office (BAföG = German federal student grants and loans system). Since more than a decade ago now, he also offers advice on financing one’s studies from a more general point of view.

All consultations are, of course, absolutely confidential and free of charge.

Topics of the consultation

Compared to other countries, stuyding in Germany may seem quite cheap at first glance since there are no general tuition fees. However, costs for accommodation, transportation, food, health insurance, books etc. need to be covered.

The first step of the consultation is always an assessment of how much money the person seeking advice actually needs. That way, unnecessary monthly costs may be identified.

Apart from BAföG, which is the most common and usually cheapest way of financing one’s studies, possibilities include a wide variety of loans and scholarships. Together with the person seeking advice, Jens Müller-Sigl will look for the best way of funding his/her studies in the particular situation.

Who can make use of the consultation service?

This consultation service is directed to all (prospective) students of the University of Oldenburg, Jade Hochschule and Hochschule Emden/Leer.

A basic orientation in English is possible. However, the extremely specific German vocabulary in this field sets a limit to the scope of the consultation.
